The Book: Theodore Balma, "The people of the Bible. History and martyrdom of the Waldenses, "by Italo Pons, preface by Antonio Di Grado, with a note of Maurizio Rizza. Editions La Zisa, pp. 256, € 16.00.

This is a work of Theodore Balma dissemination of good than of mere historiographical erudition, whose setting is affected, not just of the political climate - the Fascist period - which was conceived and written. Despite what may seem to careless readers, especially in the final pages of the book where the author pays tribute to the then head of government - a necessary act in order to avoid barriers of censorship and certainly not for flattery or an error of assessment -, the whole book is a hymn to freedom, strong defense of its ideals, tolerance, human dignity, seen through the stories and dramatic ultrasecolari the Waldenses, the first and only religious reform movement, which arose in the Middle Ages and came to this day. The events and characters told in rapid synthesis mark the key stages of a long process of religious democracy still largely unsolved, today, broadening the discourse, not only as regards the cult Valdese, but each claim, especially where there are churches with positions dominant, whose destinies are intertwined, in a report connivance, and sometimes identify themselves with political power itself. This is the time when we are up to the paradox that the abusers of a place, the abused often become another part of our stupid world.

Theodore Balma (1907-1994), Waldensian pastor, theologian, journalist and writer, he has exercised his pastoral work in various Italian cities, like Naples, Catania, Ries, Venice and Turin, leaving each in the strength of his personality .
