The Pope and children

The Holy Father, Benedict XVI , met last Saturday in the First Communion children.

result is a beautiful box, very sweet.

Andrew: "Dear Pope, what are your memories of the days of your first Communion?"

First let me say thank you for this celebration of faith that I offer, for your presence and your joy. I thank and salute you for the hug I got from some of you, a hug for you all and symbolically, of course. As for the question, I remember well the day of my First Communion. It was a beautiful Sunday in March of 1936, 69 years ago. It was a sunny day, the church looked very beautiful, the music, were so many beautiful things that I remember. There were about thirty boys and girls of our little village of no more than 500 inhabitants. But at the heart of my happy memories and beautiful is this one - the same thing has already been told by your spokesman - that I realized that Jesus has come into my heart, he had actually visited me. And with Jesus, God is with me. And that this is a gift of love that is truly worth more than all the rest that can be given by life, and so I was really filled with great joy, because Jesus came to me. And I realized that was beginning a new stage of my life, I was 9 years, and now it was important to remain faithful to that encounter, to that communion. I promised the Lord as best I could: "I would always be with you" and I prayed: "But above all, stay with me." So I went on with my life. Thank God, the Lord has always taken me by the hand and guided me, even in difficult situations. And so this joy of the First Communion was the beginning of a journey made together. I hope that, for all of you, the First Communion you have received in this Year of the Eucharist is the beginning of a friendship for life with Jesus, the beginning of a journey together, because going with Jesus we do well and life becomes good.

Livia: "Holy Father, before the day of my First Communion I went to confession. I then confessed it before. But I wanted to ask: should I go to confession every time I receive Communion? Even when I did the same sins? Because I realize that they are always the same.

I would say two things: first, of course, is that you do not have confession before Communion always, if you have not committed such serious sins that would have to confess. Therefore, it is necessary to confession before every Eucharistic Communion. This is the first step. It is only necessary when you have committed a really serious sin that you have deeply offended Jesus, so that friendship is destroyed and you start again. Only in this case, when you are in "mortal" sin, that is serious, you must go to confession before Communion. This is the first step. The second: even if, as I said, I do not have to go to confession before every communion, it is very helpful to confess with some regularity. It is true, usually, our sins are always the same, but we clean our homes, our bedrooms, at least every week, even if the dirt is always the same. To live in clean, to start, otherwise the dirt might not be seen, but it accumulates. Something similar applies to the soul, for myself, if I ever confess, my soul is neglected and in the end I am always pleased with myself and no longer understand that I have to work hard to improve, I have to go forward. And this cleansing of the soul which Jesus gives us in the sacrament of confession helps us to make our consciences more alert, more open, and hence also to mature spiritually and as human beings. So two things: confession is only necessary in case of a grave sin, but it is very helpful to confess regularly in order to foster the cleanliness and beauty of the soul and to mature in life.

again I thank the Lord for giving us this great Pope
